Use this test to assess early deficiency in vitamin B12
Methylmalonic acid (MMA) found in the urine is often associated with early stages of B12 deficiency. MMA may be ordered along with a homocysteine test when a vitamin B12 deficiency is suspected.

Methylmalonic acid (MMA) found in the urine is often associated with the early stages of B12 deficiency. Vitamin B12 is necessary for the production of red blood cells from the bone marrow. When B12 levels are low, red blood cell production decreases, resulting in anemia. MMA may be ordered along with a homocysteine test, when a vitamin B12 deficiency is suspected. Instructions Fasting is not required for this test. Take all medications as prescribed. An early-morning collection (e.g. first or second void) is strongly encouraged for the best evaluation of MMA in determining Vitamin B12 sufficiency. The easiest option to obtain an early morning MMA measurement is with the at-home B12 Functional Status test, LC100099. |
