Maintaining good vision is key to a healthy lifestyle. Eyesight is vital to nearly everything we do. Whether you're driving, cooking, watching a movie or sharing pictures on the Internet, you want your eye health to be at its best, especially as you age. Take a look at these three surefire ways to maximize the health of your eyes:

  1. See your eye doctor

Yearly comprehensive exams are great for keeping a baseline of information, and will identify whether you need to update your corrective eyewear. Has your vision changed? Does your family have a history of supporting eye health? The more you know, the easier it is to keep your eyes as healthy as possible.

  2. Protection is key

UV rays. Blue light. Dust. Debris. These all can affect our eyes in different ways. Whether it's sunglasses for when you're out and about or safety goggles during your favorite sport, wearing the right protection at the right time can make a big difference in your ocular health.

  3. Feed your eyes the right nutrition

There's a ton of research showing the correlation between a healthy diet and eye health. Eye health supplements go above and beyond our diet, supporting one of the body's most important senses.

Eye Health Information & Research

1.

What vitamins and nutrients help maintain eye health?

Nutrients called carotenoids, such as lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin, are important for eye health. Carotenoids protect your eyes from the effects of blue and ultraviolet light and from oxidative stress. Omega-3 fats, like those found in fish and flax seeds, are good for eye health, too. Other nutrients that support eye health include vitamin C, vitamin E and zinc.

2.

Which supplements support your eye health?

Supplementing with omega-3 fatty acids, carotenoids, including astaxanthin, lutein and zeaxanthin, vitamins A, B complex and E, and coenzyme Q10 have been shown to support eye health, particularly as we grow older.

3.

How can you filter blue light to avoid eye discomfort?

The macular carotenoids lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin help revitalize macular pigment density. Macular pigment is the substance within the retina that filters blue light, (including that emitted by electronic devices) before it can reach the sensitive photoreceptors at the back of the eye. Individuals whose diets do not provide healthy amounts of these carotenoids may find that supplementation with lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin helps maintain eye comfort. When spending time outdoors or driving, sunglasses that block ultraviolet and blue light can offer additional support.
