Cobalt is a rare, naturally occurring element used to manufacture alloys and hard metals. It is used in paints, household appliances, lithium batteries, cutting tools, dental prosthesis, joint replacements and surgical implants. This trace mineral is also a constituent of vitamin B2 and our bodies require a small amount of cobalt to stay healthy. Although cobalt is found in the general environment, overexposure typically occurs in occupational settings. Workers are exposed to cobalt compounds by inhalation of dust or fumes. Recently, concerns have also arisen over cobalt toxicity due to release from metal on metal artificial hips.1 Blood is the preferred specimen for measuring acute or recent exposure.
