Throughout our lives, old bone is constantly being removed (resorption) and replaced with new bone (formation) to maintain a healthy bone structure. The blood test for C-telopeptide assesses the rate of bone turnover, which can be particularly useful for older individuals.
| C-telopeptide is a blood test that measures the C-terminal telopeptide of type-I collagen (CTX-1). Bone is made up largely of type-I collagen, a protein network that gives the bone its strength and framework, and calcium phosphate, a mineralized complex that hardens the bone. Throughout a person’s lifetime, old bone is constantly being removed (resorption) and replaced with new bone (formation) to maintain a healthy bone structure. Blood and urine bone marker tests are used as an aid in monitoring bone loss in individuals with osteopenia and postmenopausal women on bio identical hormone replacement therapies (BHRT) and bisphosphonate therapies. Instructions Fasting is not required for this test. Take all medications as prescribed. |
