More than 3 million people in the United States have anemia with women and people that have a chronic disease being the greatest at risk for developing it. Anemia occurs when you have less than the normal number of red blood cells in your blood or when the red blood cells in your blood do not have enough hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is a protein that gives the red color to your blood and is mainly responsible for carrying oxygen from your lungs to all parts of your body. If you have anemia, your blood does not carry enough oxygen. Without enough oxygen, your organs and tissues cannot work as well as they should; which can lead to a whole host of symptoms. Since there are many types and causes of anemia, Life Extension has created this panel to look at the most frequent causes: iron deficiency, B12 deficiency, and the bone marrow’s ability to produce red blood cells. Instructions This test may be done fasting or 2-6 hours after eating. Both ways provide valuable information, though 2-6 hours after a meal provides a more realistic assessment of the state of your blood in everyday life. Stay hydrated and take your medications as prescribed. Avoid B12 and folate containing supplements for 12 hours preceding the test. The MMA test can provide more information on B12 status as high levels of MMA are a more sensitive marker of vitamin B12 deficiency. |
