Lithium is a trace element whose use in human health has been increasingly recognized. While its best-known role is that of supporting mood, lithium has recently been recognized as having the ability to play a role in maintaining cognitive function.^1,2

Lithium has been discovered to inhibit the GSK3 enzyme. This enzyme plays a role in the amyloid cascade whereby amyloid beta accumulation in the brains of Alzheimer’s disease patients causes hyperphosphorylation of tau protein, which results in the formation of tangles that contribute to cognitive decline.^2,3 Lithium also supports autophagy, a metabolic process that can help break down harmful tau and amyloid beta proteins.² In rodent studies, lithium helped maintain memory and cognitive performance.⁴

Inhibiting the GSK3 enzyme may also help maintain healthy glucose levels already within normal range.^5,6

A study that included 1,206,174 men and women in Japan found an association between higher drinking water lithium concentrations and a lower rate of death during a given period.⁷ When the researchers gave lithium to roundworms, a longer life span was observed. In a study involving fruit flies, lithium extended lifespan when administered throughout adulthood or later in life.⁸
